Late-November travel is when packing becomes difficult.
A lightweight puffer may be perfect one day and inadequate the next. A wool coat looks polished but can take up half the suitcase.
The answer is strategic layering.
The Lightweight Puffer
A thin puffer is excellent because it compresses well and provides insulation.
Synthetic insulation is often practical for damp conditions because it tends to retain insulating ability better than down when wet.
Down, however, can offer excellent warmth-to-weight performance when kept dry.
The Wool Coat
A wool coat is the better choice when city polish matters.
It works with trousers, skirts, dresses and boots.
The downside is bulk.
It also does not provide the same weather protection as a waterproof shell.
The Best Travel Combination
Instead of choosing one coat to do everything, consider:
Merino base + sweater + lightweight puffer + waterproof shell
The puffer supplies insulation.
The shell handles rain and wind.
This system can be surprisingly warm without requiring one enormous coat.
Advanced Rule: Do Not Pack Your Warmest Outfit Separately
Build every cold-weather piece into multiple combinations.
The merino base should work under the sweater.
The sweater should work under the shell.
The puffer should fit beneath or over another layer if possible.
Compression Reality
Down compresses extremely well.
Dense wool does not.
That is why wearing the wool coat during travel may save substantial luggage space.

Your Next Step
Put your entire travel wardrobe into the suitcase before the trip.
If the coat takes up too much room, wear it while traveling.
The heaviest item should rarely be packed if it can be comfortably worn.
